Distinguished and Famous people from Golden Plains
🌾 George Russell
Pastoralist George Russell established his headquarters at Golf Hill near Shelford while managing the Clyde Company’s Australian interests. His work in the district involved sheep breeding and the development of a substantial pastoral enterprise, followed by ownership of the property. He also supported education and was involved in the establishment of Geelong College. Golf Hill places his working life firmly within today’s Golden Plains Shire. His career belongs to the colonial pastoral economy, whose expansion transformed land use in country already occupied by Aboriginal communities.
